The proceeds from a friendly between Bayern Munich and Germany will be used to fund Die Mannschaft appointing Hansi Flick as their new manager in lieu of compensation, according to reports in Germany.
Flick led to Bayern to a historic treble last season, winning the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal. However, he recently announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season following an alleged falling out with the club’s hierarchy.
Flick is widely expected to take over as Germany manager after current boss Joachim Low departs after this summer’s European Championships. The German football association have confirmed that they will kick off negotiations with him soon, though they are keen to avoid paying any sort of fee for his services.
As reported by Maximilian Koch, the pair have apparently reached a bizarre alternative to a compensation package. Instead of receiving a flat fee for Flick’s services, Bayern will apparently receive the proceeds from a friendly match between themselves and the German national team.
It’s an intriguing concept but it also raises a lot of questions. First, it is not yet certain when spectators will be permitted back into stadiums, potentially ruling out the possibility of gate receipts. Second, there is quite a bit of overlap between the two teams. Could we see Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer play a half for each side? We’re quite into that idea to be honest.
Regardless of how the agreement for Flick’s departure looks, he departs Bavaria with his head held high. Taking over partway through last season, he steadied the ship following Niko Kovac’s tumultuous reign and restored Bayern to the pinnacle of European football.
He will be replaced in Bavaria by RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann, previously a target for Tottenham who now seem set to appoint Ajax’s Erik ten Hag.
