Raphael Varane could be available for a knockdown price this summer as he is refusing to sign a new Real Madrid contract.
When fit Varane was one of the first names on Los Blancos’ team sheet last season, making 41 appearances in all competitions and scoring two goals.
His current contract is set to expire next summer and with time running out, he does not look likely to pen fresh terms with the club. Fearful of losing the defender on a free at the end of the season, Real are ready to accept bids in the region of €35m to €40m, according to El Partidazo de Cope.
This is good news for Manchester United, who are long-term admirers of Varane. Last month United were said to be plotting a £40m bid for the Frenchman. If they do, it seems likely that Real will accept. Paris-Saint Germain and Chelsea have been linked in the past but Old Trafford remains his most likely destination.
United have long been after a reliable defensive partner for Harry Maguire and their poor end of season form when their captain was injured will have only made them more determined to get the deal over the line.
Varane is not the only centre-back United have been linked with, though. Fellow La Liga players Pau Torres and Jules Kounde have been mentioned as possible targets as well.
The Red Devils’ pursuit of Jadon Sancho is also ongoing. 90min understands that Sancho – who remains keen on the move – wanted his future decided before Euro 2020, but that seems increasingly unlikely.
Last summer the sticking point in the deal was Borussia Dortmund’s refusal to budge on their £100m asking price. This time around United are hopeful that a £75m deal can be struck.
