The Football Association (FA) has charged Liverpool coach John Achterberg and Newcastle United counterpart Daniel Hodges with improper conduct following an altercation at the end of last week’s Premier League meeting.
Newcastle came agonizingly close to earning a point at Anfield last Wednesday, only for substitute Fabio Carvalho to score in the 98th minute, giving Liverpool a 2-1 victory.
An FA investigation was launched after a member of Newcastle’s coaching staff appeared to throw a bottle into the Liverpool technical area at the conclusion of a highly charged incident.
The English Football Association has now decided to charge one member of either backroom team, with Achterberg also accused of making abusive or insulting gestures.
“Coaches from Liverpool FC and Newcastle United FC have been charged with violating FA Rule E3 during their Premier League match on Wednesday, August 31, 2022,” the FA stated.
“It is alleged that in the 98th minute of that game, John Achterberg and Daniel Hodges’ behavior was improper, and that the Liverpool coach also used abusive and/or insulting gestures.”
The two coaches have until Thursday to respond to the allegations.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said last week that he had “no idea” why eight minutes of extra time were added at the end of the game, while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said Liverpool’s winner was the “perfect response” to the Magpies’ time-wasting.
Both Howe and Klopp claimed they were not present at the post-match brawl sparked by the bottle-throwing incident.
