Manchester United’s summer pursuit of Ajax winger Antony appears to be reaching its conclusion in the final week of the transfer window.
Erik ten Hag is desperate to sign the Brazilian winger, who was crucial to him during his final two years in charge in Amsterdam.
The Dutch giants, however, are said to have rejected United’s latest bid for the 22-year-old international.
So, what exactly is Antony’s role in Ten Hag’s plans?
United have been tracking Antony since the transfer window opened and were first linked with him in late May.
Their main issue is Ajax’s unwillingness to sell an important player after losing their manager and center-back Lisandro Martinez to the Red Devils.
And with the Brazil star’s contract running until 2025, the Eredivisie champions are in a strong position.
United’s last offer was said to be £67 million, but Ajax is said to be demanding £84 million.
Lots of talent
Antony, a winger by trade, has 18 goals in 57 appearances for Ajax since joining from Sao Paulo in July 2020.
In the three games, he has played this season, he has two goals and two assists.
Despite being left-footed, Antony played on the right side of Ten Hag’s 4-3-3 formation.
But that doesn’t mean he always cuts inside; the Brazilian is adept at going past his full-back and providing cut-backs for onrushing teammates.
Antony is also a conscientious presser with a keen sense of timing — he will not shirk his off-the-field responsibilities.
The current incumbents
Manchester United, have no shortage of dangerous wide forwards.
Jadon Sancho struggled in his first season after joining from Borussia Dortmund, while Marcus Rashford was in the worst form of his career last season.
But they both scored in last night’s 2-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool, putting on eye-catching displays.
Sancho started on the right flank, with Rashford in the center and Anthony Elanga on the left.
Nonetheless, Antony appears to be United’s top target as they prepare for away games against Southampton and Leicester before the transfer window closes.
Antony is on the radar of several clubs, but his familiarity with Ten Hag’s system means United are moving quickly.
And it’s clear that the Brazilian reveres his former boss.
Last week, Antony stated that “Manchester United will improve at his hand.” He has demonstrated that his method works in previous clubs.
“Erik has been extremely important to me.” I am grateful to him, and after working so closely with Erik, I will always root for him.
“I haven’t been able to celebrate or cheer for him because he hasn’t yet received any points.” I couldn’t until now, which makes me sad. But knowing Erik, I am confident that he will soon turn the tide.”
After a dismal few years, United are not always easy to sell to players, but Antony will need little convincing.
Old Trafford has called.
Antony was left out of Ajax’s 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam last Sunday after training alone.
The club’s hierarchy is debating whether to cash in and allow him to move to Old Trafford or to keep a prized asset.
But Antony’s future is clear: he wants to work at the Theatre of Dreams.
In an interview with the Dutch press, he stated, “I can’t [commit to Ajax].”
“Right now, I’m concentrating on football, and I’ve delegated all other responsibilities to my agents and my brother.” They will advise me on the best course of action.”
Another Ten Hag reunion appears likely before the window closes at 11 p.m. on September 1.
