Sterling's form will improve as Chelsea finds their feet, according to Potter.
Raheem Sterling’s form will improve if Chelsea progress as a team, according to Blues manager Graham Potter.
The England international has struggled for goals since moving to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City ahead of the current season, with the winger looking to cement his place in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions plans.
Due to an injury, club and international teammate Reece James has been forced to play at wing-back in recent games, a position he has never played before.
This has reduced his direct impact in attack, but Potter believes the 27-year-old will regain his form if the players around him improve as well.
“It’s something we have to look at as a team, not as individuals,” he was quoted as saying on the club’s website. “We can do better, but doing better as a team benefits individuals, so that’s where the work is.”
“Raheem has the versatility, ability, and quality to play a variety of positions.” It’s not easy for us to lose the players we have. We’re constantly trying to strike the right balance and find the right solutions, but he can assist us.”
Sterling scored again for Chelsea in their 1-1 draw with Manchester United, as Red Devils defender Raphael Varane left the field in tears with a potential injury that could jeopardize his World Cup chances in Qatar in 2022.
Potter acknowledged that the looming tournament will have an impact on players as they strive to avoid any issues that may prevent them from competing.
“I don’t think it affects their performances,” he added, “but they’re also human beings.” “Somewhere in your subconscious mind, you’re thinking about the World Cup in three weeks.”
“I guess because of how close it is after the games, normally you would have a build-up phase and a bit more time, but we’re going from competition phase to World Cup in less than a week.”
“It’s incredible how it is, but we have no control over it.” We just have to do our best to assist the players and make sure they are not in dangerous situations for their own health.”
