Sam Mewis returns to the NWSL with the North Carolina Courage

Sam Mewis returns to the NWSL after signing a two-year contract with the North Carolina Courage, keeping the player in the North American league through 2023. 

The North Carolina Courage used allocation money to complete the contract and bring Mewis back to the team. The world-class talent returns after competing in Europe with Manchester City.

She spent one season with the English side, scoring 13 goals in all competitions while becoming a regular on Gareth Taylor’s side. 

Prior to her departure, Mewis spent three seasons with the Courage, where she revolutionized the game. She led her side to two NWSL Championships, three consecutive NWSL Shields and a Women’s ICC Championship title.

Internationally, Mewis has made 72 appearances for the US Women’s national team. She provided 21 goals and seven assists, while becoming the foundation for her teammates on the pitch. Mewis became an international sensation and household name during the 2019 FIFA World Cup, where she played an integral role in lifting the team’s fourth title. 

The North Carolina Courage are thrilled to have the world-class player back at their disposal. 

“She has matured into one of the most inspirational and talented players in the game. To have her back in Courage Country shows the clubs desire to remain at the top,” Courage head coach Paul Riley said.

“With her ability to penetrate with the ball, her range of passing and her tactical acumen, she has the ability to control the tempo and completely influence games. Her presence in the locker room will be an emotional lift for the entire squad and, most importantly, Sam will bring out the best in other players.”

Mewis is equally as excited, adding: “I am so thankful and excited to have the opportunity to return to North Carolina after my time overseas.

“I cannot wait to play in front of the Courage fans again and to do my very best to help us win.”
