Leaders Chelsea registered their 16th victory of the season in the Women’s Super League on Sunday with a resounding 6-0 win over Birmingham City.
After a tight first 20 minutes or so, Emma Hayes’ side broke the deadlock through Sam Kerr when she netted from a tight angle. The Australian went on to score a first-half hat-trick, condemning Birmingham to their 11th defeat in 18 league fixtures this season.
Kerr’s second came just before the break when she was the quickest to react after Pernille Harder’s header came crashing back off of the crossbar. The striker demonstrated her aerial prowess once again deep into first-half stoppage time when she popped up at the far post to turn in Erin Cuthbert’s free-kick.
Fran Kirby scored twice in the second period while Guro Reiten also got in on the act.
The Blues maintain their two-point lead at the top of the WSL with Manchester City having also won convincingly at Tottenham over the weekend. The pair are due to meet on 25 April in what could prove to be the title decider, but Chelsea continue to fight on multiple fronts.
The west Londoners, having already won the League Cup this season, remain in the Champions League and the FA Cup meaning a historic quadruple is very much still on.
Chelsea thumped Wolfsburg in midweek to progress to the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition for the third time in their past three attempts.
In stark contrast, this latest Birmingham defeat means they’ve now gone ten games without a league win and face the prospect of being dragged into the relegation battle.
