When it comes to international goalscorers, we are lucky enough to live in an era full of living legends.
Take a look at their list of the deadliest players of all time, and you’ll see that a large number are still playing and contributing to their impressive numbers.
Here are the five best international scorers.
Robert Lewandowski (81 goals)
Robert Lewandowski’s international career began in 2008 when he scored on his debut in a World Cup qualifier against San Marino.
Since then, he has become a Polish talisman, building a reputation as one of the best strikers in the world with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and his current club, Barcelona.
There is no sign of Lewandowski slowing down as the Warsaw-born hitman returns in the 2022–23 season. He topped the league’s scoring charts this season.
Ali Mabkhout (83 goals)
Ali Mabkhout’s first goal for the United Arab Emirates came in the blink of an eye when he scored four times in a friendly against Bahrain in 2012.
The striker, who has spent his entire career with Al Jazira, has not stopped scoring at the international level and is at an age where he can be expected to add to his impressive tally.
Mabkhout long ago became the UAE’s all-time leading goalscorer when he scored a hat-trick against Indonesia in 2019.
Sunil Chetri (93 goals)
The oldest player in this list is Sunil Chhetri, who scored for India against rival Pakistan in 2005.
Some 18 years later, the 1.70-meter-tall striker still scores regularly for his country, where he is both the all-time top scorer and most-capped player.
Chhetri spent most of his club career in India but also had a brief stint with the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer and Sporting in Portugal.
Lionel Messi (106 goals)
One of the greatest players to ever play the game, Lionel Messi has the extraordinary international goalscoring record you would expect from such a number.
Despite his impressive achievements at club level, it took him some time to become a regular goalscorer for Argentina. Although he debuted in 2005, he only became prolific in 2012.
Messi’s crowning achievement came at the 2022 World Cup, where he scored seven goals in the tournament, including two in the final against France, which the Albiceleste won on penalties.
Cristiano Ronaldo (128 goals)
Cristiano Ronaldo is not only the current top scorer of the national team, but he is also at the top of the list of the best scorers of all time.
The striker surpassed Iranian Ali Daei by scoring his 110th and 111th goals for Portugal against the Republic of Ireland in September 2021.
Ronaldo is still a regular for his country and has further improved the hard-to-break record since the former Real Madrid star made his debut in 2003.
