Romelu Lukaku has confirmed he’ll be staying at Inter this summer, while also hinting that he’s met the club’s new boss.
The former Manchester United frontman’s future has been a constant source of speculation in recent months, with another of his former clubs Chelsea heavily linked with a move for the Belgium international.
Lukaku has been in superb form for Inter since moving to Serie A in 2019, forming a formidable partnership with Lautaro Martinez and helping I Nerazzurri notch their first Scudetto since 2010.
The departure of Inter boss Antonio Conte following rumours the club are desperate to generate funds by selling players this summer has done little to cool said rumours, however, he’s now confirmed he has no intention of leaving San Siro this summer, while also seeming to suggest he’s met Inter’s new boss.
“Yes, I am staying,” he said as reported by HLN. “I’ve already had contact with the man who normally becomes our new manager. Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet, but it was a very positive conversation.”
While Lukaku’s announcement will no doubt come as a huge blow to the clubs desperate to secure his signature this summer, it also begs the question who is Inter’s new boss?
Conte’s departure from the club was only confirmed a week ago and as of yet there’ve been very few big names linked with a move to Inter.
The managerial merry go round has gone into overdrive over the past few weeks with a whole host of big clubs in the market for a new boss. Both Real Madrid and Juventus have opted to re-appoint managers who’ve already spent time at the helm of their respective clubs, while Tottenham are rumoured to be considering approaching former boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Lukaku’s comments regarding “the man who normally becomes our new manager” are slightly ambiguous, though they make you wonder whether Inter are set to go down the reappointment route themselves.
