Karim Benzema eclipsed Raul as Real Madrid’s all-time second-highest goalscorer after scoring in the Super Cup.
Benzema matched for second position on the club’s all-time scoring list in May, when he equaled Los Blancos legend Raul with a header in a 6-0 demolition of Levante.
He is now the only player in second place, with 324 points, after scoring Madrid’s second goal against Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday in Helsinki.
After David Alaba put Madrid ahead in the first half, Benzema made it 2-0 in the 65th minute with a familiar connection with Vinicius Junior.
Last season, Vinicius assisted Benzema 10 times, and the Brazil winger’s cross from the left side of the area provided Madrid’s new club captain with the opportunity to side-foot in a first-time finish that sneaked past Kevin Trapp.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 450 goals in his nine-year stay at the Santiago Bernabeu between 2009 and 2018, is ahead of Benzema, but it appears doubtful that the 34-year-old France striker can surpass that total.
