Qatar are the first side to be eliminated from the World Cup
Qatar has become the first team to be eliminated from the World Cup, with the host nation bowing out after a 1-1 draw in Group A between the Netherlands and Ecuador.
The Asian Cup champions were defeated 2-0 in their first group encounter against the South Americans, and then fell 3-1 to Senegal on Friday, becoming the first World Cup host to lose two matches in a single group round.
Qatar became only the third host team to concede three goals in a single group stage encounter, following South Africa in 2010 and Russia in 2018 — both of whom were defeated 3-0 by Uruguay.
Felix Sanchez’s team now has nothing but pride to play for in their last group game against the Netherlands, since no host nation has been eliminated earlier in the World Cup than Qatar (two matches).
They will join South Africa as the only hosts not to proceed to the tournament’s second round, and failing to win against the Dutch will leave them as the only hosts not to win a single game at the World Cup.
Qatar has at least hit the net in the competition, with Mohammed Muntari becoming the first player in World Cup history to score for his country, although as a consolation.
