PSG 1-3 Manchester United: 5 men who won the game for Solskjaer
The United fans are in the dreamland and they have every reason to be. Manchester Unitedqualified for the Champions League quarterfinal in a stunning fashion as they overturned a two-goal deficit to knock PSG out of the competition.
It was always PSG’s game to lose as United went into the fixture with none of their regular midfield starters in the squad. Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard were also ruled out of the game.
United needed goals and at the same time, had to keep things solid at the back. It was a perfect start for the visitors as a defensive error from Kehrer was punished by Lukaku to put United 1-0 ahead.
PSG levelled the game within minutes and United’s hope seems to have vanished at that point. However, another PSG mistake allowed United to come back into the game and this time it was Gigi Buffon turn to gift United a vital goal.
Though PSG controlled the game in the second half, United kept their hopes alive and snatched the match-winning goal in the injury time.
Without much ado, let’s take a look at 5 Men who won the game for Solskjaer.
#1 Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian international was at the right place at the right time and more importantly, he converted his chances with aplomb. Lukaku scored two goals and both of them show how good a centre-forward he is.
His anticipation, work rate, and finishing were brilliant on the night. He was easily United’s best player at the Parc des Princes. A Man of the Match performance from the 25-year-old.
#2 Chris Smalling
Chris Smalling rarely gets the credit he deserves but today, one cannot shy away. Smalling was phenomenal at the back for United and put in a scintillating defensive display.
One tackle, three interceptions, seven clearances, and two crucial blocks summarize Smalling’s night. He kept Mbappe quiet and was rock solid at the back. A night to remember for the 29-year-old.
#3 Luke Shaw
A solid performance for the United full-back. Going against one of the best attacking sides in European football, the onus was on Luke Shaw to guard his flank and at the same time, help the likes of Rashford and Lukaku up front.
It was a brilliant defensive display by the former Southampton star who kept the PSG forwards quite on the night.
#4 Scott McTominay
Scott McTominay showed a lot of maturity in the absence of Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera, and shielded Manchester United’s defense on the night. He worked hard in the middle of the park and kept things organized. His passing was accurate and he made right decisions throughout the game. His stats at the end of the day was mighty impressive.
Scott McTominay stats:
100% final third passes completed
96.2% pass accuracy
5/5 tackles won
#5 Marcus Rashford
The youngster had a quiet game up until the 90th minute. However, he delivered when it mattered the most. PSG had a lot of possession throughout the game and Rashford barely had the ball in the final third. It was a frustrating night for him as he had to contend with limited time on the ball.
The moment he has been waiting for came very late in the game. It was not a penalty for the faint hearted and the 21-year-old struck it fiercely past Buffon into the back of the net to send United through to the quarterfinals. Rashford showed nerves of steel and stayed cool under a lot of pressure and scored a goal he cannot forget anytime soon.
