Norwich City have confirmed that one of their players has tested positive for COVID-19, less than a week before the Premier League is set to get back underway.
The Premier League confirmed a pair of positive tests on Saturday night, with the league set to kick off on Wednesday after a three-month absence, and the Canaries put out a brief note to confirm that one of the two was one of their own.
A club statement read: “Norwich City can confirm that one of its players has returned a positive test result following the recent round of COVID-19 testing.

In line with the Premier League’s protocols, the player will now self-isolate for a period of seven days before being tested again at a later date

“In line with the Premier League’s protocols, the player will now self-isolate for a period of seven days before being tested again at a later date. The player must return a negative test result before being able to resume training.
“The club will not name the player in question and asks that his request for privacy and confidentiality are respected at this time.”
The positive tests raise further questions about the suitability of the league’s return, with full-contact training resuming earlier this month and Norwich playing a two-hour friendly against Spurs on Friday.

Players who have come into contact with a colleague who subsequently tested positive are not expected to self-isolate themselves, with Premier League research showing that 98% of ‘close contact’ lasted less than five minutes per match this season (via Rob Harris).
