Eddie Howe takes charge of his third match as Newcastle manager on Saturday, as his side host Burnley at St James Park.
The Magpies are winless in the Premier League, sitting rock bottom of the table with a gap of six points between them and safety, and have lost 2-0 to Arsenal and most recently drawn 1-1 with Norwich under their new boss.
They face a crucial test on Saturday, facing a Burnley side three points adrift of safety themselves. Sean Dyche’s men, however, head into this one unbeaten in their last five Premier League outings.
Here’s who Howe could choose in hope of getting a monumental victory.
Martin Dubravka (GK) – Made a couple of good stops against Norwich out will inevitably retain his number one spot for the Magpies.
Javier Manquillo (RB) – Made his first appearance for four games last time out and fared well enough to deserve another in this one.
Fabian Schar (CB) – Has been fairly consistent this campaign while putting in a couple of dominant displays, and will start at the heart of defence once more this weekend.
Jamal Lascelles (CB) – Ciaran Clark was sent off on Tuesday so Lascelles’ return from suspension comes at a perfect time for Howe.
Jamal Lewis (LB) – Looked threatening – if not clinical – against Norwich and should be given another opportunity here.
Ryan Fraser (RM) – Was sacrificed for a defender after Clark’s 10th-minute red card on Tuesday, so it’s only fair to start him in this one.
Jonjo Shelvey (CM) – Actually looking good under Howe, with his evident playmaking abilities a real avenue for success.
Joe Willock (CM) – His permanent transfer to St James’ Park hasn’t provoked a continuation of the spectacular form he hit while on loan – but there’s still time.
Allan Saint-Maximin (LM) – A thrilling player to watch, the Frenchman will look to add to his haul of three goals and three assists so far this campaign.
Callum Wilson (ST) – Ended a four-game goal drought with his penalty against Norwich, and will now look to increase his tally of five in ten Premier League outings.
Joelinton (ST) – Nowhere near as prolific as everyone wanted him to be but, my goodness, does he work for the team.
