Manchester United midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are both set to miss the upcoming meeting with Chelsea after failing to overcome their respective injuries.
The Red Devils have embarked on a warm weather training camp in Marbella, where they are preparing for a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on 17 February.
However, as noted by the Manchester Evening News, neither Pogba nor McTominay will make it back in time for the game after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to leave them at home to focus on recovery.
An ankle injury has plagued Pogba’s entire season and restricted him to just eight appearances in all competitions. He has not been seen since the 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on Boxing Day and has since undergone surgery to try and fix the issue.
McTominay’s last appearance was in the same game, during which he picked up knee ligament injury which has kept him sidelined ever since.
Both players are thought to be making good progress in their respective recoveries, but the Chelsea game will almost certainly come too soon, given neither player has returned to first-team training yet.
“They’ll have a week or so off and we’ve got more days [rest] because we’re playing Chelsea on the Monday,” Solskjaer said when asked about his plans for his squad. “So we’ll get together on the Saturday and we’ll have a good camp, working on different things.
“Of course, we’ve got a few new players, hopefully we can integrate them into the squad. [The players] have been fantastic. We’ve had to, with all the injuries we’ve had, rely on many of these to maybe play more games than they should, and they’ve been brilliant.
“Yes, we’ve had ups and downs, but it shows that we do miss the injured players so, yeah, it’ll be a nice break and I think it’s about time we had that in England. I think all teams will get their energy levels back.”
Alongside Pogba and McTominay, United will also be without the injured Marcus Rashford, but there could be a debut for striker Odion Ighalo, who sealed a deadline day switch from Shanghai Shenhua.
