The Continental Tyres Cup fixture between Manchester City and Leicester which was due to take place on Wednesday evening has been postponed due to a number of Covid-19 cases in City’s squad.
On Sunday, England right-back Lucy Bronze was forced to delay her return from injury due to test and trace guidelines.
Keira Walsh and Janine Beckie were also absent, having tested positive for coronavirus and needing to isolate as a result.
It has now been confirmed the tie – in a competition City have won three times, the last coming in 2019 – has been called off for now.
City’s statement read: “Manchester City can confirm that tonight’s Continental Tyres Cup tie away at Leicester City has been postponed.
“The decision has been taken by the Football Association following a number of further positive COVID-19 cases in the women’s squad in addition to the two previously confirmed.
“A new date for the game will be announced in due course, with all tickets remaining valid for the rescheduled fixture.”
Leicester added: “The Club apologies to supporters for the inconvenience and disruption caused by the postponement and wishes everyone affected by the outbreak at Manchester City a speedy recovery.”
Games across England are being affected by rising Covid-19 infection rates.
The Premier League revealed earlier this week that seven-day positive tests were at their highest since May 2020, while games have had to be called off.
Most recently, Manchester United’s trip to Brentford was postponed, while Tottenham have also had a severe outbreak in their camp, resulting in fixtures against Rennes and Brighton being cancelled.
The Omicron variant now accounts for 20% of Covid cases in England and the public has been urged to get their booster jabs.
