Luke Shaw has seen off the challenge of Jordi Alba to win 90min’s latest Welcome to World Class fan vote, sealing his spot as the fifth-best left-back in football.
The Manchester United and England defender particularly enjoyed a superb 2020/21 season, fulfilling his potential and announcing himself as one of the best in his position.
We pitted him against Barcelona star Alba and asked our followers who had been in better form this year, and 54.8% voted in favour of Shaw.
He would have been a shoo-in for an automatic place on 90min’s list of world class left-backs if he had carried the form from the first half of the year into the second, but Shaw has struggled in recent months and so his spot was not guaranteed.
Shaw was regularly putting in flawless performances at club level before nailing down a spot in England’s squad at Euro 2020, scoring a memorable goal in the final against Italy.
Compared to other players on 90min’s list of top left-backs – plus Alba who was in contention for this spot – one of Shaw’s biggest strengths this year was his availability, with only Joao Cancelo (47) making more appearances at club level (46) from January 1 to November 30. For a player who has struggled with fitness and injuries for much of his time at Man Utd, this felt like a career-year for Shaw.
His return of 11 clean sheets – only bettered by Cancelo (18) and Alba (12) – was largely distorted by United’s awful start to the 2021/22 season, with the Red Devils shutting out the opposition a measly three times in all competitions up until the end of November.
But Shaw and United’s woes this season have not bothered 90min’s followers it seems, instead remembering the insane level he was playing at in the first half of this calendar year.
Luke Shaw, welcome to world class.
