Karim Benzema has praised departing Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, labelling him the ‘perfect man’.
The striker has played the best football on his career under Zidane. During his first spell in charge he led Real to a trio of consecutive Champions League titles, with Benzema starting all three finals. Since Zidane returned to the helm in 2019 the pair have enjoyed more success.
In each of his two seasons in charge Benzema has scored close to 30 goals, with his form helping Real regain the La Liga title in 2020.
As he has flourished under Zidane’s leadership, the 33-year-old was understandably disappointed to see him leave the club.
“He’s a great coach and on a personal level he’s the perfect man. He’s great. I’m disappointed about him leaving, but life goes on,” Benzema said, via Managing Madrid.
He was speaking at France’s training camp ahead of Euro 2020. After years of being ostracized from Les Bleus due to off-field complications, Benzema is finally back in the fray and revealed he was delighted at how things were going so far.
He added: “I’m super happy about being here and being back with France, things are great! The adaptation is perfect, we are playing well on the pitch and that’s how I like it. I can’t wait for the games to begin.
“This is a calm group, they won the World Cup and I feel they are winners. I just started training and the level is very high, I get along with everybody, although at first I was spending more time with Varane. It’s going great!”
France are most people’s favourite for the tournament, with Benzema one of several world class players at Didier Deschamps disposal. However, they have been placed in a difficult group alongside Germany, Hungary and holders Portugal.
