Jose Mourinho reveals which striker is most similar to Harry Kane

Former Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho has given his verdict on which other striker he’s worked with is most similar to Harry Kane.

Mourinho was dismissed as Spurs head coach six days before the Carabao Cup final, but struck up a solid working relationship with Kane throughout his tenure.

Speaking to The Times (as quoted by Spanish outlet Marca) Mourinho drew parallels between Kane and Karim Benzema, who he managed at Real Madrid.

“The way Harry Kane is playing now, doing the movements he does, when was the last time I had a striker doing this? Benzema!” Mourinho said.

“Because Didier Drogba was not that, Ibrahimovic was not that, Lukaku was not that. So sometimes the statistics don’t fit into the reality.”

Benzema was a reliable source of goals and also linked up well with Cristiano Ronaldo during Mourinho’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu, evolving his game to become a complete forward.

Kane had been considered one of the most prolific strikers in Europe before Mourinho’s arrival, but has seen his stock boost further since working with the Portuguese coach. In Tottenham’s Amazon Prime ‘All or Nothing’ documentary, the very first episode focuses on Mourinho explaining how he could help Kane to reach new heights.

The 27-year-old has done exactly that despite Spurs‘ shortcomings. Under Mourinho, Kane was moulded into a well-rounded forward, dropping deeper and (finally) racking up assists while still scoring from all angles.

He’s notched up a career-best 13 league assists so far this season alongside 21 Premier League goals, showing just how Kane has been able to add a new dimension to his game as a creator for teammates as well as a scorer.

His progress has warranted transfer speculation from all angles in line with Spurs’ failure to win silverware again this season, with Kane not hiding his ambition to win trophies as a team.
