Kylian Mbappe spoke with the media for the first time at the World Cup on Sunday
Kylian Mbappe is unconcerned about the Golden Ball or the Golden Boot in Qatar 2022, instead focusing on France’s second World Cup victory.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar is a strong contender for the tournament’s best player award as well as the reward for the tournament’s top scorer.
Mbappe scored twice in France’s 3-1 win against Poland on Sunday, sending the country into the quarter-finals and extending his lead in the Golden Boot race to five goals, two more than his nearest challenger.
However, the forward’s main concentration was on a positive result for France, rather than any individual accolades at the end of the World Cup.
When asked if he wanted to win the Golden Ball, Mbappe replied, “To be honest, no.” “For me, the main goal is to win the World Cup. The most essential thing now is to win the next game, the quarter-final.
“That’s what I imagine. My only ambition is to win the World Cup. I never imagined winning the Golden Ball or the Golden Boot.
“I’ll take it if I receive it, but that’s not why I’m here. I’m here to compete and assist the French national team.”
Mbappe was meeting the media for the first time at this tournament, and he stated that it was a conscious decision to ensure he was in peak condition to lead France to victory.
“I wanted to take the floor because many have been wondering why I haven’t appeared in front of the media,” he explained. “It was nothing personal; all I wanted to do was concentrate on the tournament and my football.
“That’s how I work when I need to concentrate. That’s why I didn’t talk to you earlier.
“I was warned I would be fined, but I preferred to pay it myself. The federation should not have to pay the penalties.
“This is my fantasy tournament. I am overjoyed to be here. Throughout the season, I have been emotionally and physically prepared for this competition. I wanted to make sure I was prepared for this competition, and I am.
“It’s been nice so far, but we’re still a long way from our goal of winning the final.”
