A goal by Slimani gave an important victory to the North African team, which can certify the classification on Tuesday in front of their fans
A goal from Islam Slimani, a striker for Sporting de Portugal, gave Algeria a 0-1 victory in Cameroon, which is setting foot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Djamel Belmadi’s team won at the Limbe Stadium in Yaoundé and must close the classification in four days, in the second leg, in Blida.
Both teams aspire to return to the final phase of a World Championship. The two missed Russia 2018. Cameroon intends to reach its eighth World Cup and Algeria, the fifth.
The Algerian team capitalized on the imbalance they achieved on the brink of half-time when Slimani, with a header, took advantage of a Youcef Belaili cross into the area.
Cameroon insistently sought an equalizer but were unable to beat the steadfast visiting goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi. Algeria, in the final stretch, was able to extend its advantage with counterattacks and clear scoring chances.
The tie will be resolved on March 29, in Blida.
