Bayern'should have scored more' in 5-2 victory, according to Nagelsmann.
Despite a 5-2 home victory over Augsburg in the DFB-Pokal second round, Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann felt his team “should have scored more.”
Bayern fell behind after nine minutes thanks to a goal from Mads Pedersen, but a double from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and a smart Joshua Kimmich finish put the Bundesliga champions ahead 3-1.
Dayot Upamecano’s unfortunate own goal gave Augsburg hope of a comeback, but late goals from Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies ensured Bayern’s progression into the third round of a competition they have won 20 times, 14 more than any other team.
Despite scoring five goals against Augsburg, Nagelsmann desired for his team to be even more ruthless, telling ZDF: “It’s a traditional cup game.
“The team had enough chances to make the game clearer earlier on, but we failed to capitalize.
“There were numerous occasions when we should have scored more goals.”
Nagelsmann praised his team’s improvement after falling behind early on, particularly their dominant period after halftime, which saw Kimmich and Choupo-Moting make it 3-1 with goals in the 53rd and 59th minutes.
“We didn’t get off to a good start; we were sluggish and didn’t accept many duels,” Nagelsmann admitted.
“The 20 minutes following halftime were excellent. We were physically on the same level.”
Nagelsmann responded when asked why Bayern struggled at the start of the game: “Playing against a team that plays every ball straight ahead is not easy.
“It’s always a delicate balancing act. Do you play football or pass the ball to the opposing team?
“We didn’t always make the best choices.”
