Bayern Munich are interested in continuing their quest to hoover up every good player in the Bundesliga by striking a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Dortmund for almost two years now, and club director Michael Zorc recently confirmed they have a ‘gentlemen’s agreement‘ with Sancho to let him leave for the right price this summer.
That figure is thought to sit around the £90m mark, although it has been suggested that Dortmund may accept somewhere closer to £78m as Sancho has just two years remaining on his contract at Signal Iduna Park.
Manchester United have been heavily linked with Sancho, while Chelsea and Liverpool have both seen their names thrown around, but according to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Bayern are prepared to join the race for the winger’s signature.
Bayern have had a better seat than most to see Sancho’s electric form in Germany. In what has actually been a slow year for the winger, he has still managed to rack up 14 goals and 18 assists in all competitions this year, and incoming boss Julian Nagelsmann is understood to be a huge fan.
While it’s easy to believe that Bayern would be eager to sign Sancho, that’s where the logic seems to end.
From an economic standpoint, Bayern aren’t exactly known for splashing that kind of cash. Their £70m acquisition of Lucas Hernandez remains their club record by a long way, with Leroy Sane’s £45m move last summer second on the list.
While Bayern would obviously love leaving Dortmund in the mud by signing Sancho, it’s hard to see them shattering their transfer record for a player who they don’t even really need.
When Nagelsmann arrives this summer, he will already have Sane, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman as senior wingers, with Thomas Muller and 18-year-old Jamal Musiala competing for minutes in attack as well, so there isn’t an obvious vacancy for Sancho to fill.
A move to Bayern for Sancho isn’t outside the realms of possibility, but all the signs suggest a move to the Premier League is far more likely for the England international.
