Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has put to bed rumours that Robert Lewandowski will be leaving the Allianz Arena this summer.
The 32-year-old has been in electrifying form for, well, the best part of a decade, but has been utterly superb throughout 2020/21. He’s notched an astounding 39 Bundesliga goals, and has two games to break the goalscoring record of Gerd Muller – which stands at 40 and has been place in for almost five decades.
Lewandowski’s truck load of goals helped Bayern seal a ninth consecutive Bundesliga title earlier this month, but puzzling rumours soon linked the Pole with a move away from the club. Chelsea and Real Madrid were touted as potential destinations, though talk of an exit has been remarkably quiet since those rumours first came to light.
Now, Bayern legend Rummenigge, who is the club’s chairman, says a deal to see the prolific striker leave the club has never been on the agenda and it would make no sense to let him leave.
Speaking to Sport1, he simply remarked: “Sure he stays. Who sells a player that scores 60 goals a year?”
Lewandowski’s insatiable thirst for goals has led him to the cusp of breaking Muller’s record, after years of being a regular goalscorer in the Bundesliga. He’s missed five games through injury – a rarity given his superb fitness record over the past decade – but still sits on 39 goals, despite playing in just 27 games. Overall, he has 46 goals to his name in all competitions.
In terms of his time left at Bayern, Lewandowski has two years remaining on his current deal. But while there are no talks of a new contract being in the pipeline, his continued excellence in front of goal has also led legendary former goalkeeper Oliver Kahn – who is also part of Bayern’s hierarchy – to dismiss the idea of signing Borussia Dortmund sensational Erling Haaland, who is widely viewed as the heir to Lewandowski’s throne as the best striker in the world.
“A package that costs over €100M is unimaginable for us now,” Kahn told SportBILD (via iMiaSanMia). “We’ve Lewandowski, he has a two-year contract here. Just for that, we don’t have to think about Haaland today.”
