Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri bemoaned his team’s luck with VAR after a late winner was ruled out in a 2-2 home draw with Salernitana.
Arkadiusz Milik appeared to have won the game with a header from a corner in the 94th minute, but VAR disallowed the goal after the ball took a slight nick off Leonardo Bonucci, who was in an offside position.
Just a minute earlier, Bonucci had leveled the game with a rebound from his own missed penalty, as Juventus came back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to earn a point.
Milik’s goal was ruled out, and he received a second yellow card for his overzealous celebration. A brawl ensued, with Juve’s Juan Cuadrado and Salernitana’s Federico Fazio receiving straight reds, while Allegri was also given his marching orders for his role in the incident.
After the game, Allegri expressed his frustration with VAR, telling reporters, “I can’t give interpretations because I’m not a referee; you have to accept the decisions.” I thought the referee did a good job.
“On the goal, I’d like to see an image of [Antonio] Candreva in front of the ball where the corner is taken.” I’m curious if there is a picture of Candreva somewhere.
“We’ve been a little unlucky with this VAR since the beginning of the season, we can say that.”
Allegri, in his second stint as Juve manager, was disappointed with his team’s first-half reaction to falling behind to former Bianconeri wideman Antonio Candreva, before Krzysztof Piatek doubled the visitors’ lead just before halftime.
“Let’s break down the game. We played very well for 20 minutes and then stopped,” Allegri added.
“I knew it had to happen sooner or later, and I wanted to see the reaction.” It was the first time we had been put at a disadvantage, and I was curious to see how we would react. We did not respond well.
“Then we played a good match in the second half.” Salernitana played well, and I must congratulate [Davide] Nicola.”
