Ajax have shown their appreciation for their supporters after clinching the Eredivisie title by melting down the championship shield and creating 3.45 gram stars to hand out to all of their 42,000 season-ticket holders.
The Dutch giants cruised to this year’s title, confirming their 35th league success with a 4-0 victory over FC Emmen at an empty Johan Cruijff Arena.
And to show their love towards supporters during this difficult pandemic, in which they have been forced to play most games behind closed doors, Ajax decided to repay their fans in a unique and historic manner.
The club revealed on Twitter on Wednesday morning that they have decided to honour their fans by melting down the league shield and transforming it into stars, which will be sent to every supporter who renewed their season ticket last year.
The video showed clips of the city of Amsterdam, the home of Ajax, before saying, “Amsterdam: The city where everything is possible.” We then see the shield being melted down before revealing the stars which will be delivered to every season ticket holder.
The video ended with the phrase, “A piece of victory, a piece of history, a piece of Ajax. Coming to all season ticket holders.”
Supporters will now be proud owners of a special piece of Dutch football history, with each 3.5g star containing a 0.06 gram piece of the shield, reports Bn Destem.
“In this way the club literally shares the championship and the 35th title with the fans,” the club announced in a statement. General manager Edwin van der Sar also praised the supporters, stating that they are “involved in the championship in a unique way.”
“Our players have felt their support every game,” he said. “For example via social media and on the way to the stadium. They have a tangible memory of this season and are thus involved in the championship in a unique way.”
