Robert Lewandowski could play in another World Cup
Robert Lewandowski is “not afraid” of participating in another World Cup, but the Poland captain admits his team’s tactics will need to evolve.
The forward’s team were defeated 3-1 by France in their last-16 clash, bowing out of Qatar 2022 following a tough season that saw them struggle in the group stages as well.
Having never scored a World Cup goal in his career, Lewandowski got his second of the tournament late in the game against Les Bleus.
When asked if he would still be considered for the 2026 edition in just under four years – by which time he will be 37 years old – the veteran Barcelona frontman refused to commit.
“Physically, I’m not afraid of anything,” he remarked. “But there are so many things to take care of first. It’s difficult to say presently. Athletically, that doesn’t terrify me, but there are still a lot of unknowns.”
Lewandowski suggested that a shift away from Poland’s defensive displays in Qatar would be necessary.
“There’s still a long way to go, and obviously, you have to enjoy the game,” he remarked. “It’s a little different if we attack or try to attack. But there’s no fun if we play conservatively.”
Poland were always underdogs against a France squad that, while missing several important players due to injury, has emerged as one of the favorites to reclaim the crown they won four years ago.
Lewandowski admits that his team was always going to struggle, adding: “Playing France is a difficult match.
“We fought and did our best. We performed quite well in the first half, with a few chances. Maybe it would have been a different game if we had scored first.
“Unfortunately, we gave up a goal in the final minute of the first half. It’s always difficult to recover from that. We responded brilliantly and pushed to return. We may be proud since we tried everything.”
